A virus has recently been identified that will spy on a user’s keystrokes. When found, the virus will destroy the PC that it has infected.pc-virus
This type of “wiper” virus is particularly scary. With other types of infection, even individuals that did not have the proper level of protection for their systems could always have the virus removed. In this scenario, removal is not an option. The moment your PC is infected with Rombertik, prepare for downtime. Users and companies will have to restore from a backup or re-install and rebuild their data. Neither option is ideal.
The best way to avoid this costly, and potentially business ending, scenario is proper protection and a good IT security strategy. We previously discussed it in our tongue-in-cheek ETD article back in February.
Here are the highlights:

  1. Have up to date anti-virus protection
  2. Stick to browsing only reputable websites
  3. Be wary of any email containing an attachment that you are not expecting
  4. Only use company email protected by a good anti-spam product
  5. Utilize a firewall with active gateway antivirus and anti-spyware protection
  6. Backup… and test it. Often. Not just file recovery, but system recovery as well.
  7. Have a good disaster plan. Plan for the worst and hope that you never need it.

Ignoring security threats will not keep you safe. In fact, a lack of awareness of risk causes many businesses to expose themselves to avoidable risk. 51% of business shut down after a major data loss. Many times, this can be avoided by having a proper data protection strategy.
