E-mail fonts matter. How to change your default font in Outlook.

It’s All About the Details

Working Americans spend almost a third of the workweek checking and reading email. In a 40-hour week, that’s over 11 hours a week reading online communications. But, we are so focused on what we are saying that we tend to overlook how we are saying it, and more importantly how it is coming across to the readers.

Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook (the most used email clients) all use sans serif fonts by default. This was originally intended to clear out any grayscaling caused by the extra strokes of serif fonts being viewed on low resolution monitors. Luckily today our standard monitors do a much better job of clarifying all those little details. It has become reasonable to customize your e-mails without fear of illegibility. Taking the time to give your messages that personal touch can leave a small but lasting good impression.

Five Minutes Makes a Big Difference

You can easily change the default font in Outlook in about 5 minutes. Follow these steps to update your font and give your messages a fresh new look.

1) Click the File tab

Archives

2) Click Options

3) Select Mail, then Stationery and Fonts…

* This may be Tools > Options > Mail Format in older versions of Outlook

4) On the Personal Stationery tab, select whether you want to change the font on new messages or replying/forwarding messages.

5) Select the font and size you would like for your email and click OK. Do the same again if you need to adjust replies and new messages. Then click OK two more times to exit.

6) Bonus tip: Choose a hip font such as Helvetica, Georgia, or Verdana. 🙂
